Dalla Strada dell’Olio alle vie del mare

The "Dalla Strada dell’Olio alle vie del mare" (From the Oil Road to the Sea Routes) exhibition is an artistic project that beautifully documents the landscape and cultural heritage of the Pisan territory. It uses photography to trace a journey from the hills to the coast, revealing the essence of a historic part of Tuscany.
The Journey and the Landscape
The exhibition's title refers to a real and symbolic path through the region:
-
The "Strada dell'Olio": in Italy, a "Strada dell'Olio" is a designated route that winds through areas renowned for high-quality olive oil production. The one featured in this project is the "Strada dell'Olio dei Monti Pisani". This road connects the five participating municipalities (Vecchiano, San Giuliano Terme, Calci, Vicopisano, and Buti), which are nestled along the slopes of the hills between Pisa and Lucca. This area is famous for its terraced olive groves, medieval villages and historic villages
-
"Alle vie del mare": the journey concludes by heading "to the sea routes", referencing the area around Vecchiano, where the agricultural landscape gives way to the coast of the Tirrenian and Ligurian Seas
The exhibition of 40 black and white photographs, curated by the Luminance Photo Agency, captures this transition. The choice of monochrome photography emphasizes the timeless textures, lights, and shadows of the landscape, allowing the viewer to focus on the fundamental beauty of the region's landmarks and natural forms.
A Collaborative Celebration
This project is a wonderful example of local collaboration. By uniting, the five municipalities created a significant cultural event to promote their shared heritage. The exhibition, launched back in 2016 at the Palazzo Pretorio in Vicopisano, served as a traveling showcase, inviting both locals and tourists to see the familiar territory through a new, artistic lens.
