TOBIA DI PISA

Tobia Di Pisa was born in Pisa in 1980 and, from a young age, has been fascinated by the visual arts, particularly cinema, which has captivated him throughout his life and ignited his curiosity and imagination.

However, it was only in 2013 that he discovered his true vocation: photography, born from the need to capture moments and glimpses through the lens of his sensitivity. He then began attending courses and studying digital photography in all its stages, initially with Fucina Fotografica in Pisa, and later with photographer Marco Carmassi, with whom, along with a group of other enthusiasts, he founded the Luminance Photo Agency, giving life to a innovative and interesting projects. The first of these was the creation of Pisa on the Street, a photographic book that encapsulates the faces of Pisa, its places, its inhabitants and street shots in a true 360-degree portrait.

One of the most prestigious outcomes of this synergy was Tobia's participation in the collective and traveling photography exhibition, "Sonori Scatti di Calici". Thanks to the material gathered during the events, Cantina Jazz invited him, along with other talented photographers, to take part in this significant exhibition project. His photographs have been exhibited in two highly distinguished venues:

  • January 2023 at the prestigious Piaggio Museum

  • June 2025 at the “Peppino Impastato” Public Library in the Municipality of Cascina

This collaboration represents more than just a professional assignment; it is a shared journey in creating a visual narrative that celebrates the union of different arts.

This project crossed the Atlantic and allowed the group to present it in New York at the Magnum Photo Agency. From this experience, PisaNY – Pisa New York in Comparison was born, an exhibition held at Palazzo Lanfranchi in Pisa in 2015, which saw the successful participation of numerous fascinated visitors, including Rai (Italian Radio and Television), which also dedicated a radio service and a onsite visit, and the historic Fotografare italian magazine also published an article with one of his photos shown in the exhibition (below reported).

Since 2017, Tobia Di Pisa has been enthusiastically collaborating with Cantina Jazz, a leading cultural association in Pisa's cultural scene, renowned for its unique ability to blend music, food and wine and art. This solid partnership has led him to provide photo coverage during the association's evocative events, capturing the atmosphere and emotions that only Cantina Jazz can create. Beyond live documentation, his work has actively contributed to the association's visual communication by providing photographic material for promotional purposes and for enriching the content of their official website.

Tobia Di Pisa's photographs cannot be categorized into a single genre or style but follow and interpret the countless facets of his personality, resulting in a rich and varied portfolio.

Although his early experiences were in both Street and Landscape Photography, over the years Tobia became passionate about a new genre: Surreal Photography which channels the photographer's eccentric imagination through the artistic-visionary fusion of different photographs. The protagonists are evocative scenarios that transform reality into another possible, metaphysical, dreamlike reality, with visionary images that guide the viewer on a journey of personal inner discovery; scenes that evoke the origin of life, the worlds beyond dreams, the subversion of what is spatially possible: a triumph of creativity and utopia.

Each image represents a fragment of a journey made by the author, where the viewer has the opportunity to gaze upon an unexpected point of view, capable of stimulating and engaging their more unconscious and unexplored side.  The complexity of this photographic genre does not prevent the artist from becoming passionate about and deepening his study of Analog Photography, both in black and white and color, using films that he himself learns to develop and later print in his darkroom.
