Analog Photography
The subjects of this portfolio are not staged scenes, but fragments of an authentic and spontaneous daily life.
The Tuscan coastline during the summer months, bathers suspended in time, urban glimpses and streets of Pisa, the quiet glow of streetlights, and the solemn solitude of lighthouses along the shore. Whether working in black and white or color, my goal is always to strip away the unnecessary to reveal the authentic structure of the scene.
These photographs seek out film grain, tactile substance, and that timeless texture that only silver and chemistry can provide. It is an evolving visual diary, a tribute to the simplicity of the real world and the emotional depth hidden within the ordinary moments that surround us every day.
The Matter of Everyday Life: Notes from the Darkroom
Alongside my digital experimentation and surreal visions, I cultivate a deep need for roots and reality.
This project is born from the desire to slow down the creative gesture, returning to analog photography through the use of film and traditional darkroom craftsmanship.
Choosing analog means abandoning instant previews and immediate corrections. Every frame requires patience and a careful meditation on light and composition before pressing the shutter. It is a practice that demands discipline and visual honesty; the frame captured on film is a definitive choice that stays with you all the way to the final print.
My creative process does not end with the click of the shutter; it continues in the silence of the darkroom. Personally developing the film rolls and hand-printing the images using traditional chemistry and silver gelatin paper is a deeply physical ritual. Watching an image slowly emerge on the wet paper creates an intimate and powerful bond between the author and the work.
My darkroom experimentation relies on a rigorous and traditional approach to the printing process. For black and white printing, I exclusively adopt the Ilford system, working with British-made developers, stop baths, and fixers paired with premium Ilford photographic papers, selected for their exceptional tonal range and archival stability.
The choice of film is driven by a continuous aesthetic and material research: I alternate between black and white and color emulsions of various speeds and manufacturers, exploring the unique grain and color rendering of Fujifilm, Kodak, and Ilford stocks.
Each film roll is carefully selected and tested to interact with the specific light of the scene, turning the chemical medium into a distinct expressive tool.
